Where Does a Bunion Develop?

Many people who enjoy the sport of running are aware of the importance of having a strong lower body. Additionally, when proper running shoes are worn, it may be possible to prevent foot conditions that can include bunions. This is considered to be a deformity, and may hinder running enjoyment and performance. It can occur as a result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, and have inadequate room for the toes to move freely in. This may cause the big toe to move toward the other toes, and the bone may protrude on the side of the big toe. This can lead to pain and discomfort, and larger shoes may need to be worn that can accommodate the bunion. If you have developed a bunion, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition, and offer advice about the correct shoes to wear.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Dr. Anna Petrov of Family Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Babies and Flat Feet

When babies are born, the feet have a considerable amount of fat. This allows them to be  flexible, making it easy to stretch the ligaments that hold the bones together. Toddlers typically walk at approximately twelve months of age, and it is suggested that their first shoes are made of materials that can easily bend. Additionally, there needs to be adequate room for the toes to move freely in, which may help to prevent painful foot conditions. The majority of babies are born with flat feet, and the arch will generally develop at six years of age. If you notice your child's feet turn inward or outward, it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you to monitor this condition.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Anna Petrov of Family Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Research has indicated there are three habits to develop that may be beneficial in preventing running injuries. Running and jogging may be easier to enjoy when the body is warmed up. An effective warm-up can increase the body’s range of motion and flexibility. The second habit consists of running with a goal in mind. It may be helpful to follow a program that can alternate running styles. People who enjoy the sport of running are aware of the third habit which consists of properly stretching and noticing if there are existing aches and pains. If you would like additional information about how to prevent running injuries, it is advised that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can provide you with the necessary knowledge.

All runners should take extra precaution when trying to avoid injury. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Anna Petrov of Family Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

There are a lot of mistakes a runner can make prior to a workout that can induce injury. A lot of athletes tend to overstretch before running, instead of saving those workouts for a post-run routine. Deep lunges and hand-to-toe hamstring pulls should be performed after a workout instead of during a warmup. Another common mistake is jumping into an intense routine before your body is physically prepared for it. You should try to ease your way into long-distance running instead of forcing yourself to rush into it.

More Tips for Preventing Injury

  • Incorporate Strength Training into Workouts - This will help improve the body’s overall athleticism
  • Improve and Maintain Your Flexibility – Stretching everyday will help improve overall performance
  • “Warm Up” Before Running and “Cool Down” Afterward – A warm up of 5-10 minutes helps get rid of lactic acid in the muscles and prevents delayed muscle soreness
  • Cross-Training is Crucial
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Have a Formal Gait Analysis – Poor biomechanics can easily cause injury

Common Types of Foot Pain

The feet are considered to be the foundation of the body, and may feel aches and pains from performing daily activities. Many types of foot pain can be caused by poor foot structure, or from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. A common form of pain can be found in the heel, which may be indicative of plantar fasciitis or a heel spur. The condition that is referred to as flat feet may cause pain in the middle of the foot, where the arch would generally be found. Patients have found moderate relief when custom-made insoles are worn, which may provide the support that is needed. Bunions may cause pain as a result of inflammation, and can become irritated as the affected part of the foot rubs against the shoe. If you experience any discomfort in your feet, it is strongly advised that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can determine the cause and offer treatment options.
